From Henry Mayer von ELTZ:

The inscription on the plaque, a copy of which I found in the legacy of my aunt Alice Mayer, made me think: "what happened to her children and grandchildren, what happened to their offspring?"I also belong to the offspring.
I hope that other reader will help me to add missing and to correct possible incorrect data. A very small amount of data is documented. And if I tell more than others, there is no malicious intent. The thing is, I just found out more about them than anyone else.
Scattered around the world today live offspring "Archangelical", those people, mostly consisting of people of German, English, Dutch, and Norwegian descent, who arose and stood on his feet in located on the White sea port town Arkhangelsk. All the foreigners were called Arkhangelsk Archangel, so I'm going to call it.
Although many of the newcomers soon accepted Russian citizenship to obtain a license or to take up official posts, assimilation with the Russian population was extremely slow due to the Russian belonging to a different denomination and a higher level of education of the newcomers and their descendants. The fact that in many cases there were contacts of the archangels with Russian families can be considered a good thing, because with the increasing importance of the Arkhangelsk port and the growing forces of the Russian people, who chose leadership from their ranks, the influx of fresh foreign blood has decreased so much that the case often reached marriages between relatives. For a long time without consequences it could not last. Mrs. IDA Hiller /nee Clapton/ says: "Mother (*Matilda A. PEC) often told us that we have pure blood, but then we didn't understand what it is. It was so: the Germans are married to each other, and their children born ill, blind or deaf. Some were themselves to blame, because they so lived. Old men warned young people, those who wanted to marry: "don't always need to eat from the same pot!"In General, family archangelical were healthy and viable and gave the world a surprising number of able-bodied individuals. Many of them lived to a very old age. In 1968 I composed the album "the Chronicle of Barthold Benjamin Mayer and the story of his descendants" and later propagated it on a photocopier in a small number of copies. Those interested can find it in libraries. There is also a Chapter from the book of Dr. E. Amburger, which gives a clear picture of the life of the then archangels. / Eric Amburger himself from a family of archangels, now a Professor at the University of Marburg/.
Much of what is written in this book will be mentioned in the text. The head ends with the statement that in the second half of the 19th century the colony of archangels strongly decreased. Many of the famous families have left the city. "News about the rest become poorer and at last almost entirely disappeared." Some archangels finally settled there or in other parts of Russia. Others went after the 1st world war to the West. Some lived a few years ago, others are alive now. Many of them I want to thank you for your support to me when Sobranie mateials about the family. You will find the names in the source list. Now I want to call the dead in 1970, Go Hiller /nee Clifton/. In 1968, I had a long correspondence with a 90-year-old woman, who gave me a notebook of memories, written by her at an advanced age.
Instructions for the reader.
I selected the icons for the descendants of Moses Clapton start with CL. The number of separated dots from KL. numbers you can know the generation to which belongs to a descendant of immigrants. For example, CL 7.7.3.2 belonged to the 4th generation. The penultimate number indicates whose child is in question, the pre - penultimate-about whose grandson it is.
For example, CL 7.7.3.2 — child CL 7.7.3 and grandson for CL 7.7 Numbering of children does not always coincide with the order of their year of birth /due to data incompleteness/. Therefore, it is possible that CL 7.7 is older than Cl7.6.
In Russia until 1918, there was an old calendar style. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to set what style the other dates.
The transition to the new style:
1.3, 1700 to 28.2.1800 + 11 days,
1.3.1800 to 28.2 1900 + 12 days,
1.3. 1900 + 13 days.

Some sheets indicate: a St / old style/, n St./ new style/. Names given partly in English, partly in German, sometimes in Russian form. Today it is difficult to establish, as someone who called himself William, William or Basil, Dorothy, or Dora Dorti, Often abbreviated the name Nellie could also mean Ellen and Eleanor, Sometimes sources mention patronymic, adopted in the Russian language. Reverse translation of the name of the father must be done carefully since, for example, A. is not always the son of Andres, he could be a son of Henry. Russian surnames are often given in a transcription. Hence numerous options, especially when it comes to Sizzling. Not always I was able to call right. And yet, instead of the Russian ending "ov", I prefer "off" because many German readers read "OU" as "o", as is the case in German, but not Russian words. I started to record and copy information about the family in the fall of 1970, i.e. at a time when there were not generalized to the entire information. I have chosen a free form of writing with an indication of the worksheets allows you to perform additions.
An expression of type "not known" or "not installed" has a General character, and only shows that I failed to learn.
In various places of the text there leaves questions to the reader, Neleus to working with you.
On the basis of considerations of time and money, I was able to produce a very small number of instances. I also ask those to whom I am sending this copy to show it to others interested in this matter. Reports of descendants of this sequence of names/ families/. So first will be notified of Clapton and their descendants, then the families with whom Clapton the first generation intermarried: brown, desfontaines and Mayer, then of the families with whom intermarried Claptone 2nd generation: Frieze, Viseu, Gellerman, PEC, Pilecki, Lindes. Followed by without systematize the rest of the family. In the text of the memorial plaque mentioned the name "Claughton", a"Clapton" are given in parentheses. Other sources also mention the name of the settlers as"Cloughton". Thus, it can be assumed that the name of the settlers was initially Cloughton, and then was elected to write a lighter version.
Tamara Clapton (with 1.9.1.1.2-), which leads the family book of Kaftanov, strongly protests against this hypothesis. Her father and her father-in-law told her that their surname from the very beginning was written "Clapton" and "Claughton" occurred in Arkhangelsk, thanks to the not too knowledgeable people. Perhaps, thus tried to emphasize the English origin of the family. In 1910, the name "Cloughton" flashed in Vladivostok. Communication with the Archangel Claptone install failed.
1.Moses /senior/ born 27 Feb 1772года in Liverpool. There he married 12.1.1795 year by 19-year-old Elizabeth Tatlok. 2 years later, the couple went to Arkhangelsk. Perhaps Moses belonged to in the substantiation usemouse there shopping home. Father's Moses name was Marcus, and in Arkhangelsk Moses followed the Russian custom to call the father's name after their own and called him Moses Markovich. This couple had 12 children, but most of them died in infancy or early childhood. Moses died on 11.12.1826 in Sasovo, Tambov province, South-East of Moscow. Perhaps he was in one of the shopping trips. Almost all of his children were still minors, the youngest son was 8 years old. I wonder how long it took before he knew his father was dead. Elizabeth survived her husband for almost 14 years. She was able to raise her children and live up to the time when her children married representatives of archangelic families.
Years of life of children of immigrants are given in different sources with varying degrees of accuracy, but there are no too noticeable contradictions. I quote only one of the sources.
Already in the year of marriage of his parents was born the first son of James /КЛ2.1/ About him almost nothing is known. Records from other sources contradict these facts. In one case, the year of his death is not specified, in another named.1795, i.e., the year of his birth. This is for two reasons it seems unlikely that James died as a baby: first, on the tombstone it is written that 8 children mourn the death of his mother. Since the years of life of the other seven are known, it should be the eighth. Secondly, it is striking that none of the subsequent children were christened James, then, as all subsequent children were named before them the dead babies.
Joseph / CL 2.2 / was born 9.7.1797, in the year of resettlement. The settlers chose the sea route and had to arrive at a time when the sea was free of ice, i.e. from late April to mid-October. Joseph's place of birth is unspecified. This is because he saw the white light on Board the ship during a heavy trip to Arkhangelsk. Joseph died boy 25.11.1805. The next child, born 22.3.1799 year in Arkhangelsk – Anna /KL2.3 / died 14.7.1800 year.
Moses the younger / KL2.4 / was born 23.2.1801 year in Arkhangelsk, 2.6, I827 propulsion on first source of or 23.2. I829 on the other. He married Catherine des Fontaines, which gave him 6 sons and 2 daughters. Moses died 8.8.1860, His wife survived him for 18 years and died 23.2.1878 years.
John /Кл2.5/ lived with 8,4,1803 for 6.5.1804.

Elizabeth /Кл2.6/ born 14.4.1804 G., married 24.4.1831 years for William brown and bore him 2 sons and 5 daughters. Elizabeth died 87-year-old 19.4.1891 propulsion ( 0 1).
07.3.1806 propulsion was born William / KL2.7 / he married 14.4.1833 to Dorothea Roters, born 11.12.1803.they had 2 sons and 4 daughters. William is known as a man of impeccable reputation(08). In Arkhangelsk, he owned a small cable plant. William died 6.4.1869 g., his wife died 92 years old 10.7.1896 g.
About born 1.5.1808 and dead 7.9.1850 G. John(2) nothing more is known.
Anna(2) /Кл2.9/ 7.6.1810 G. was born 0na married Abraham des Fontaines 2.9.1829 g . She gave birth to 3 sons and 5 daughters. Anna died in June 1883 and was baptized 11.10.1811.
Dorothy(1)/C 2.10/ lived with 4.9.1812 for 17.5.1816 G.
Dorothy(2) /Кл2.11/ born 17.5.1816. In 1837, she got engaged in Arkhangelsk with merchant Karl Christian Mayer, who soon took a place in SP\b. 3.1838", in 1841 the couple arrived again in Arch-SC, where Dorothy died 1.10.1873 and was buried 4.10.1873.they had 5 sons and 3 daughters. According to her son A. F. Meyer, she was a very shy woman. She was afraid to climb the ship to the rest of archangelica to sail down the Dvina river on a summer vacation. The love of her husband to the young unbroken horses brought her much trouble. What a horror it should have covered in 1851, when a fire on may 29 destroyed most of the city and its own house!
On the last twelfth child — a son, Gheorghe/TC 2.12/ born 19.4 1818, except for the date of death 31.12.1851 G. unknown.
Some children of Moses the elder known the names of their godparents: Moses/ml./ - m-R and Mrs. Banner and Mr. Geard. Anna(2) — Franz Shultz, Mrs. Shultz and m-R Raters. Dorothy(2) — m-R Rodda, Mrs. Rodda and m-R Raters. George — captain William Ramsay.
Questions to the readers:
From Moses / KL2.4/, Elizabeth / KL2.6/, William / KL2.7/, Anna(2) / KL2.9 / and Dorothy (2) /K. 2.11 / descendants alive and now. Therefore it would be interesting to add dates of years of life at their descendants, and also to learn more about their partners in marriage.
The following data are not available: for Moses: place of marriage and death, for his wife: date and place of birth and death; for Elizabeth: place of birth, wedding, death; for her husband: place and date of birth and death; for William: place of birth, wedding, death, for his wife:place of birth and death; for Anna(2): place of birth, wedding, death, for her husband:
And now about their children:
William James/ CL 4.1 / was born 15.2 1830. Sources mention another 2 Kaftanov, who were probably his sons:
Sergey/TC 4.1.1/ 25.6.1869 was born, and Constantine/C 4.1.2/ born 8.10.1871. Their Russian names suggests that William James married a Russian. He died 11.7.1885. About Sergei and Konstantin more today is not known. Be can they have descendants, which and now live in Russia,
Carolina (1) / CL4.2 / was born 14.1.1831 and lived only 3 days.
Carolina(2) Elizabeth/Кл4.3/ born 6.5.1832. She married Nicholas Frise against the will of her parents. About the origin of her husband is not known. IDA Hiller saw his photo where he was depicted in uniform. Maybe he was a naval officer. In Arkhangelsk was a marine officers ' school, which provided many suitors for daughters archangelical. Not all of these marriages were happy. It was customary to send a woman who asked if their chosen one was against marriage. Wife Frieze died one after another — Carolina-8.7.1880 years. They had 4 daughters, which I will discuss further on the leaves.
From James William happen all those living today Claptone. He was born 4.12.1833 G. Initially, James was betrothed to his cousin Annette Elizabeth Clifton/7.5 KL/. But she soon noticed that James pays more attention to her sister Adelaide/ Кл7.b/ and asked him to marry her sister. The wedding took place in 10.9.1861.he worked in the Commission on hemp and flax on the Arkhangelsk stock exchange. He was talented in many ways and created a significant fortune. He knew a lot about construction. Under his leadership was rebuilt naval officer's school. He directed the construction of a house for his cousin Robert/ CL 7.2/. Both the construction site was called the yards and were located in the neighborhood. Later, James bought from Robert is located here rope factory. To the possessions of the James belonged to the fields, where among other was planted barley. Cakes of barley enjoyed much success in Arkhangelsk. About 4 sons and 3 daughters of James and Adelaide will be reported on the sheet further. James died after a serious illness on June 15, 1898 in Arkhangelsk.
After dead baby Edward (1)/C 4.5/b.4.10 1835, mind. 7.11.1835, followed by Edward (2). He was born in Arkhangelsk 18.9.1836 and died 8.11.1866 About it In Arkhangelsk unknown, as well as his brother Charles/Кл4.7/ who was born 9.3.1838 and died 21.5.1839 year in Orel. The youngest son of Moses Constantine was born 21.5.1839 g. he married Elizabeth Faber from Vyatka. It is not known whether they had children. Constantine died in Kazan 16.9.1878.
William / KL2.7 / had six children. His oldest son, named after his father, was baptized by William. At the time of the death of his father, young William lived with his wife in Onega, where he worked with his brother-in-law Hellebrandt. His wife's name was Nellie, Gellibrand. By his father he moved the little house and rope factory in Arkhangelsk under the condition that William will take care of his mother and unmarried sister, anetta Elizabeth/CR-7.5/. But William wished to remain in Onega and gave up his inheritance. His wife gave him three children:
Catherine/TC 7.1.1/ named Kate, studied languages and the Telegraph system. In St. Petersburg, she received a place of private telegraphist mother Empress Maria Feodorovna, who was a Danish Princess. At the same time, Katya had to learn Danish in addition to Russian, German, English and French. In the court Kate had authority, received a large salary and many gifts.
Alice/TC 7.1.2/ is a very short-sighted, worked in the Duma of St. Petersburg. She did such a brilliant career as a nurse, but was kind and sweet woman.
After the Revolution, both sisters announced that they were British subjects and, still unmarried, left for England. Their mother had already died by then.
Lernard /Кл7.1.3/, it was called lenny, gave his mother much trouble. School he was given. His uncle, Gellibrand took him out of school and left to work in the firm. But being childless, Generaland not know how to handle kids. Gerbrandt, Leonard paid a good salary to support his mother and sister Leonard. But Leonard made money with his friends. Uncle, quickly flew into a rage, sent Leonard to Australia, where he had commercial relations. Being still quite immature for independent living, Leonard there, and probably fell. About once a year he wrote to his mother, who did not know the conditions in which he lived.

Robert/KL 7.2/ 25.10 born,1835. He went to Church school in Arkhangelsk. He found a place in the firm "Gribanov, Pentanes Ko". To obtain the necessary trade licenses, Robert accepted Russian citizenship. He made trips deep into Russia. Goods were transported to Vologda, where they were stored until spring, and then they went to Arkhangelsk down the river on the barks. Robert often accompanied these transports. Loaded barges carried only by the current. If the current was weak and the wind was favorable, then such a journey could last for a month. After his father's death Robert had grinel his paternal inheritance, the rejected brother, William, and related all obligations. In place of the small house Robert built a large in 1869 He commissioned the construction of his brother and cousin to James /KL.4.4/ because he couldn't care about this in connection with their travel. The necessary funds were presented by the chief Robert Gribanov, who highly appreciated it. Subsequently Robert created on the basis of this considerable fortune, but lost most of it because he had to vouch for his brother-in-law Heinrich Kellerman. Very comfortable, at that time, the house at one end belonged to mother and sister, and friend – him /Robert/, who then conceived to marry. He married only forty years old/ 1875-1876 / 19-year-old Matilda Petz. Father of Matilda Alexander Andreyevich liked to kiss the bottle. Marriage to Mathilde was not accepted by the family and communication, including business with the neighboring yard stopped /James/. When James visited the silver wedding anniversary of Robert and Matilda, it was an outstanding event. Matilda Clafton (b. Petz) died in Berlin-Babelsberg 1.7.1945 year. Robert and Matilda had 2 daughters: IDA /C 7.2.1/ 24.09.1877 was born, Mother promised her that she will be attending Church school in Arkhangelsk. But the school was already closed by the Russian authorities, and IDA visited "Klerrschule". It was a private training organized by Julia Mayer, who was called aunt Julchen, with the support of her sister Emmilia Mayer, aunt Emmy, who was very popular in the city. But it did not give the right to attend high school. So IDA went to a Russian school. More thanks to chance, she became a kindergarten teacher. At first, the children of relatives with whom she had to play and speak German were elected. Then the children began to walk at a more organized group. When pastor Krause organized a kindergarten, he was copied from the establishment of IDA. To get an official permit, IDA had to give a few trial sessions in the Russian men's gymnasium.  IDA got engaged to 34-year-old Benedict/Benno/ Hiller, who soon married her! Their children will be reported further. Because Hiller was a native of Riga, the couple moved in 1923 from Arkhangelsk to Riga. In 1939, IDA moved to Berlin, where he died in 1970 at the age of 92 years.
Emilia Dorothea / Cl7.2.2 / was born 9.12.1880. In 1913 she married in Arkhangelsk for Willie Wallace from St. Petersburg. On the river there was an ice drift and the Church was inaccessible, so the wedding took place at home, thanks to pastor Krause. Because Goblak was a German citizen, during the war, the couple were interned. After the war, the couple moved Babelsberg, where Emmy died 25.1.1967, her husband-12.12. 1948. Robert Clafton / CL 7.2 / died 5.1.1911 in Arkhangelsk.
His sister Dorothea / CL.7.3 / born 25.10.1840, she married Charles Wishau, who soon died 23.6.1869 Dorothea gave birth to twins who died shortly after birth. IDA Hiller recalls that aunt Dasha did a lot with the children of relatives, sang take pictures.  Dorothea died around 1910.
Matilda / KL.7.4/ married Heinrich Kellerman, which was already under way. The children of this marriage will be reported on the sheet further.
Annette Elizabeth/ KL. 7.5/, the stories of IDA Hiller was especially good and useful man; After a failed engagement to James / KL 4.4/ she never got married. In winter, while Robert / CL 7.2 / and his wife lived in Vologda, Annette raised children. The Annetta caring mother IDA Matilda Hiller ( ur. Petz) until 1922 ,until she left Arkhangelsk. / Matilda; born in 1854, died at the age of 92 / 93 years/. With age, Annette Elizabeth was, like many other archangelica large originally. IDA Hiller describes her daily walks with Alma Mochalova/ CL.4.4.6/. They were not next to each other, and one after another, talking at the same time in German, and very loudly. When they went for a walk, at home it was called "the train left". After the 1st world war Anneta did not get permission to leave. She felt very abandoned at that time, as many of her relatives and friends have left town over the border. She fell ill with erysipelas and had lost her hair. Soon after that she died in Arkhangelsk.
Adelaide / CL 7.6./ was very good. Her marriage to cousin James/CL 4.4/ was happy. This happiness, however, was overshadowed by a hereditary disease that affected the health of some of the children in the marriage.

IDA Hiller wrote their memories, reaching old age, in part on his memories, partly the stories of their parents. And she texted me that her memory /as I think is surprisingly good/ not reliable. The excerpts given here are shortened and taken from different places of her memories.
Arkhangelsk / Archangel means earth angel / is located in the mouth of Dvina river, where the river splits into several sleeves and forms many Islands. Near Arkhangelsk, the river makes a bend on which the city is built so that the streets in it are also bent. The river, first street, has a large bend, the second Trinity Avenue is already a lot straighter, and St. Petersburg, the Avenue is almost straight. But between these two streets, starting from the town hall, there is another short street — Pskov Avenue. The last so-called "new streets", Novgorod, Kostroma lot shorter than the first. So, following on them, end of the city, you can reach your goals faster. The city is a "sixth mile" and villages. On the high Bank of Dvina there is a house of Peter I, protected by an superstructure and often visited by tourists. Although it is a great question whether the house built by the king. The big island of Solombal was connected to the city by a floating bridge every year in the spring. Here was the port, where foreigners for many years led a lively trade, mainly trading in timber, grain and other goods.
Archangel lies on the right Bank of the Dvina, although every street has a storm drain leading to the river. On such drains water to the city didn't arrive, and it was necessary to carry water buckets /only then carried out a water supply system/. The residents had to walk on the water. From the rich to do, there was a wagon or sled, on which was a barrel. The poor drove the water on the sled or carried in buckets. The clothes were rinsed in the river.
In the Solombal, separated from the town of Ruka Dvina, the shore was low, and every year the river coming out of the banks, flooded the whole island. Water have flooded the basements and lower floors, bringing a lot of damage. I have twice had the opportunity to survive the flood in Solombal. First time with the Schmidt family.
Ms. Schmidt was driving the boat and handed out bread and produce to the poor. Paula (my girlfriend) and I rode a boat to Mymax. It was interesting, though eerie. The path ran through the forest. Water climbed so highly, that small poles, camped on the edge of sidewalks, were almost not are visible. The second time I lived with my cousin Tilly, Guttormsen. She lived on the ground floor. We got out the window to the boat and sailed along the street. During the ice drift to the city could not swim. The break-up was so intense that ice formed whole mountains. Before the debacle they made a bet / lottery/. For money it was possible to predict when the ice drift will begin. The one who predicted the correct hours, receive the money.
When lady IDA Hiller says about the Germans, it is the common name for those archangelical who gravitated to the German school and Church. Some of them were not Russian, but not of German origin. Most of them accepted Russian citizenship and was loyal to the Russian government. State-Ms. Hillier writes: pastors and teachers were for the most part from abroad. One day the German pastor began to pray for our German Kaiser Wilhelm II. Soon our Church employee went to the Governor and complained. So we got rid of this disrespectful pastor. If someone needed help or someone was collecting that money, the Germans always gave the largest amount. For example, we didn't have an electric tram. The money was given for this purpose by the Germans. Mayor William Lovelace made sure that this tram let to line. As same all were happy, when our urban head the first have driven on it on city!
Not only men, but also German women worked for the benefit of the city. So ladies Shergold, Petz, Surkov, etc. took care of one orphanage in the Archangel and the other in Solombal. When the city was to be held a lottery in favor of children's shelters, they all worked in different parts of the city on maps and tickets. The ladies visited the shelters on a weekly basis and made sure that everything was in order. The case involved young people.
Of course, that the Germans cared about themselves, about how to preserve the German language and not to forget it. In the old German school, where my parents studied, there were specially assigned ladies who spoke with children at the changes in German, English and French. All subjects were taught in German. But then it was forbidden, and eventually the school was closed. Later it was opened again, but it was allowed to teach only in Russian. Unfortunately, I had to go to school when the German school was closed. So I went to a Russian gymnasium with my sister. Very rich parents sent their boys to St. Petersburg in German Annenschule and Petricola. There they lived in a boarding house.
The story of IDA Hiller about Peter E. des Fontaines.
A very young Peter worked for a summer in the office of the company "Gribanov, Fontaines Ko" in Vologda, which was driven by my father Robert Clifton. Among the young people with whom he spoke in Vologda Peter, was a very attractive Russian girl Anna Petrova 20 years, who worked as a seamstress. Once in the company of Peter jokingly said that he wants to marry her. Other young people demanded that he keep his word. And Peter kept his word. The marriage was entered into hastily, before the arrival of Robert Clifton to Vologda. Robert tried to prevent the marriage because of different nationality and religion of the bride – at all times it was stronger arguments than even class differences (des Fontaines was eminent, wealthy merchant by the name). The marriage was not happy. Peter was sent to St. Petersburg to his father's sister Anna Gribanova. There he met and fell in love with Jenny Frieze, which was adopted by a childless family Gribanova, after the death of her parents, Nicholas Friese and Caroline Elizabeth Clifton. Peter was asked several times his wife a divorce, but she did not agree.  Peter was appointed Manager of the estate Gribanov in Krasavino near V-Ustyug, where his father's firm had a textile factory. He has repeatedly tried to talk Jenny to come to him, but she refused. Finally, Peter and Jenny went to Vienna, accompanied by sister Jenny, Anna Deploringly. There they were married. Formally, this marriage could not be recognized as valid, so the children of this marriage were officially recorded for childless brother Peter, probably Theodore (Fyodor), because other childless brothers Peter was not.
Children: Yevgeny (born 21.03.1897), Nikolay (born 05.04.1899), Elena (born 20.02.1901), Anatoly (born 1904) and Vladimir were born in Vienna.
Note: the Decision of the Vologda Ecclesiastical Consistory of may 8, 1892, about the divorce of Peter des of Fontaines and Anna Petrova is not approved by Synod, January 31, 1917, the business finally closed with the abandonment of the first marriage valid. (Arch.help RTIM f 1412, op-20, No. 501, 1905-1917)
Gertrude p. Clifton was born on 16 September 1904 in the city of revel (Tallinn), and grew up in Arkhangelsk and all life then he remembered the sign over a small factory of his grandfather: "the cable factory Clapton—1799»

Her father Pavel Yakovlevich, as well as the grandfather, James (Yakov), remained the British subjects—it was then allowed. Mother Gertrude, August M. Kaunissaari were Finnish-German descent, grew up in Estonia. Thanks to family traditions, the formulation of education in the family and foreign governorates, the decisive years for the formation of the girl passed in a multilingual, full of literary interests, where English, Russian, German and French languages were cultivated, with which she did not part all her life. In 1918, the UK has offered to evacuate its citizens from Russia, the family decided to move—maybe just for a time to England, leaving in Arkhangelsk all his property. Gertrude on academic year have left in Sweden. After receiving a scholarship to the Parisian Russian Lyceum (which gave her, in particular, excellent training in Latin), Gertrude, the eldest of the five daughters, separated from her family and moved to France. She graduated high school in 1923, when she was 19, a round excellent student. After that, she attended several courses in London, worked there for a while (at the hotel "Savoy" as a translator-Secretary), and in 1926 married Nikolai Platonovich Vakara and settled in Paris with her husband, a retired artillery officer, who at the time wrote for the emigrant daily "Latest news" and has already begun to gain fame as a journalist. In the late twenties at Makarov had two daughters. In the 30-ies of the Gertrude p. has been actively engaged in translation activities and translated in Russian language for basements "Latest news" a total of 39 novels—37 with English and two French. During the German occupation, many foreigners in France were deprived of the right to work, and the family's income consisted of unreliable casual earnings. Gertrude began working as a seamstress in an underground workshop. At the end of 1940 daughter Makarov with a group of children were sent to America and the American Unitarian Service Committee, and in July 1941 Wakari were finally able to join them. Nicholas, who was then about fifty, went back to school and soon after that began to teach; Gertrude helped him learn English, to support his family and to educate his daughters, who had already acclimatized in America. With her constant help and support, Nikolai Platonovich soon defended his doctoral dissertation at Harvard University and successfully began—for the third time!- "new life" as a University Professor and scientist: in the following years, he wrote several books about Russian culture, about Belarus and about Russian—and in all his works participated his wife, who made translations for him and collected materials (and mastered the Polish and Ukrainian languages). In the early 1960s, they could afford to spend the winter in Florida (which is mentioned in several Gertrude poems); the rest of the year they lived in those University cities in the North-East of the country, where Nikolai Platonovich taught. Gertrude began to translate first the order, then according to your choice and taste. Among her works are highlighted in the translations of the main work of L. S. Vygotsky on psychology and books of Evgeny Trubetskoy about the icons. By the end of the 1960s, she was considered the best American translator in history, psychology, sociology, etc. During these years, Gertrude began to write poems that were regularly published in the leading Russian newspaper "New Russian word", but her book was not published — it came out only to Albany in 1984 and almost half consisted of previously unknown poetry translations, mostly from English. In her poems before us appears a charming, refined, brilliantly educated and slightly romantic teenage girl, looking at the world with wisdom, not peculiar to her age. Then in verses occurs the image of the mother, taken love to the children through all the trials of life, a loving wife, admiring a bright, shimmering paintings of her gifted husband, the scientist and posmeyalsya at the same time on his weaknesses and quirks. Here, a middle—aged woman, but have not lost the spark of flirtation and fun prikolachivayte front of the mirror. Next to the woman for whom marriage turns its bitter side, which can not escape from the prison of life ("Agnes-Catholic"), there is a very different image—a woman devoted to his work, successfully making its way in a cruel, indifferent, impersonal world. Then the woman-poet, wizened, compassionate grief of widows. The grandmother and mother receiving pleasure from the children and grandsons and together with them banter over rhymes "the grandmother poet". Finally, a widow grieving for ever-departed husband, buried under the Northern snow. Gertrude Clafton wackar died December 2, 1973, from a stroke, from which she never regained consciousness, not having lived a few months to seventy years.

ON THE PREVIOUS VERSES
For their insincerity, a dozen years
They lay in the drawer, in the opal.
After all, the truth needs to abide by the poet,
Although it comes lie sounds prompted?
Sometimes, the sonneteer, language and literature, James Earl Jones
For sound sacrifices his own mood.
After all, in autumn-fruits and harvest,
All aspirations of the spring performance,
And here, podi, Kailasa line

Militant opposed the abolition.
Well, yield. Let him sing and she's lying,

ENGLISH-RUSSIAN BYL
(There stands a green oak;
A gilded chain on the oak tree:
And day and night the cat scientist
All goes on a chain around).
Pushkin
Russia. Childhood. That half-century.
Half a century before the war…
Not supposed to, but failed
To sit in the kitchen and in family room.
The wonderful world opened up
From cards and songs for us then.
A kind of pretending
The brain is childish sometimes.
Here's the little brother's interpretation,
That unkind need to to tell.
But for starters let me give you quote—
Nobody, I hope, copyright:
So I'm the one she clubs lady,
But the path to the dark forest.
And aftoi most clubs lady
You will find a worm's interest.
After all, he thought that with a certain lady
It will find the most interesting worms,
Forest, special, not those, that himself he
Always digging out of the beds and alleys.
But the girl is arguing with a nice:
"Tell the truth to your father.
Then quietly and happily
With prayer we will go to the crown."
"Oh, not your, eh, bird, hand
I asked my father again?
But he did not understand my flour
And gave me a cruel rejection."
He begged, clean and heartily,
Love until a coffin promised,
Horse like the wind, "with a Golden bridle»,
With something pearl, painted.
And finally the resistance melts
Love the victory so we anticipate.
"Don't worry, darling.,
Forget the disturbing dreams."
Persuaded. Fled in the dead of night.
But it soon became her "light is not nice»:
Forgot he the oath fatal,
When the other loved.
Us girls before the fate of such
Clutched the heart of the prophetic chill.
Well, how is it? Hero-and suddenly,
with a grin of evil:
"Go back to your father's house!»
The cook, strange to cook young
And brown, who arrived "with Pomerania»,
Called a wonderful name Gracida,
Unheard of (or since).
But we've already heard of druids.
And knew by heart "there stands»,
What we've been saying, hardly knowing,
When Russian literature was the pressure.
ANYWAY
That was. Not return,
Don't change, don't erase.
And will not forget. Well, so what?
Flying calendar sheets,
Pages of life, diary,
The foliage of trees, clouds, And the sounds of music and verse—
And the wind, the wind wears them.
Blows wind all and the entire
Into the open throat of nonexistence.

IN THE CATHEDRAL (KENNEDY—KING—KENNEDY)
There is a famous person,
Row by row, between the white columns.
Gathered in parting to pray,
Going for last call.
This is the day of official sadness
And a solemn funeral.
Female profile behind the Smokey veil
Killed, humbly inclined.
The widow's thoughts in a haze veils:
How long have the groom, lectern…
We knew we knew what would be separated.

"Let the rose be torn,

As the rose of Nadson forever fragrant,
And the flame shines, and the chord rings,
So for me shining forever
Favorite Persian eyes.
Is the pain and the wound is healing.
As above, a sweet voice speaks.
Not broke off alive the charm.
What is reality and what is dream? And that-a memory?

AGNES-CATHOLIC.
It is impossible to get used to knife blows.
A hundred times the same pain in the same wound is acute.
As for the first time.
You don't freeze up.
Ready.
But again a tear
Darken the blue eyes.
As a sarcoma, as a shroud as the ACE of spades,
The lives of your blessed Union
Indissoluble.
There is no way to escape the painful bonds,
Of violent games is continuous.
It is impossible to get used to knife blows.
But and throw, to leave, to leave cannot be—
Impossible.
