The offspring of the world today live offspring of the "Aglic and Sveisk Germans" - the archangelites (Archangeliten), consisting mainly of people of German, English, Dutch or Norwegian origin who emerged and rose to their feet in the port city of Arkhangelsk.
It all began with the English captain Richard Chansler, accidentally opened in 1553 the sea route to Muscovy. Trade people from different countries rushed to the deserted shores of the White Sea - hence, with the gracious permission of Ivan the Terrible, the practical development of the Russian North by the West began. "Manifestos" of Peter I promised the settlers religious tolerance and decent living conditions. From the blessed western lands to the land of "baptized bears" and church apostates, businessmen and craftsmen, peasants and church attendants, ship builders and sailors, warriors and healers, gunsmiths and fortificators, engineers and craftsmen went to the country of barbarians and savages (so it was believed in the West). mining, scientists and artists. And Russia opened their doors and hearts to them, became the second homeland, where fame, honor and respect came to them.
Dvinskaya land - ancient Zavolochye: the embankment of the Northern Dvina - the first settlers were planted here, Gostiny Dvor, where the commercial life boiled, the St. Catherine's church is the center of the spiritual life of the German settlement, the Lutheran cemetery with the graves of our ancestors. Life in the north is unattractive and strong, enterprising people settled here. Archangels built shipyards and ships, spinning and rope enterprises, erected smithies and mills, set up "cooks for heating sea animal fat and leather drying", opened schools and gymnasiums on their own money, bargained with their fellow tribesmen. Their generous donations went to beautification and decoration of the city. The ships of the archangels transported the forest to all European countries, and on the way back - the goods needed by Russia, down to the sugar cane from Egypt. From simple traders, they became lumbermen, turned into successful merchants and the first people of
Arkhangelsk more than other cities, came into contact with Western European culture, trading business with foreigners. North of the remote outskirts of the state became one of the busiest areas of it. In 1916 there were six foreign consulates in Arkhangelsk: Great Britain, France, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium. We tried to trace the origin of a kind from deep times, tried to tell about the amazing fate of the archangels. During our research, we as if ourselves experienced the life that began in the 14th century, before us was not a "historical novel", but an authentic embodiment of the previous centuries of being.
